• Tidy up paperwork, clothes, electronics, etc., before cleaning surfaces with a sponge so you don’t have to work around piles of stuff.
• Clean from top to bottom. Start with cabinets, high shelves, and cobwebby ceiling corners, and then sweep dust and crumbs off the floors.
• Sweep everything—don’t forget spaces under furniture—into one big pile and either collect it in a dustpan or vacuum it up. (Most of the buildup will be in the kitchen and high-traffic areas like a front hallway.)
• Mop tiled floors with a mixture of hot water and floor cleaner, wringing the mop as you go. Then clean the mop and finish by going over the floor again with plain water.
• Sinks, showers, and bathtubs naturally accumulate soap scum, so be proactive and clean them regularly with a sponge and a good surface cleaner. If your faucets or showerheads are blocked, tie a baggie full of white vinegar around them to dissolve the grime overnight.
• Dirty toilets are the grossest. Use a toilet brush to clean the inside of the bowl. Clean the outside with a sponge and spray (don’t forget the underside of the seat!). Apply liquid toilet bowl cleaner around the bowl at the top, and flush to distribute it.
• Wipe spatters off the stovetop and kitchen counters as soon as you’re done cooking to prevent caked-on gunk.
• To save money (and paper), use sponges, cloths, and rags (aka cut-up old T-shirts) instead of paper towels—but throw them out when they get shredded or smell bad.
• Besides your weekly (okay, biweekly) cleanup, don’t forget less frequent but still important chores like sweeping behind large furniture and appliances, washing your mattress cover (seriously, get a mattress cover), flipping your mattress, tidying outdoor areas, and cleaning inside cupboards and drawers.
• Warning: Never mix cleaning products containing ammonia with ones that contain bleach—you’ll create very toxic fumes!
